On Saturday I was invited to visit Charterhouse Swallet, well axially visit the new passages found by the diggers which is now officially Mendips deepest cave at over 600feet.
Alison and Pete Moody took me and a couple of others on a jolly to the bottom where Pete was going to dive the static sump. Just past singing stall is the beginning of the new passages found over the last couple of months, from here on the cave enters a boulder collapse which has been shored up with tons of cement (a little more would not go a miss in my opinion) after this a small climb down enters chambers with white stall formations in abundance. Their are the odd small crawl and flat out bit in water, well it is Mendip. You soon reach another ladder pitch which takes you deeper than GB cavern in the same field and this water soon enters on the right. At the bottom a passage enters from the left this is where at the end Pete dived the static sump but no way on was found. The main passage continues and a sump reached. A brilliant trip and well worth a visit especially with tea and cake back at the Wessex.
Bean, Alison and Pete Moody and a couple more. (Alison is giving a talk on Charterhouse at Hidden Earth)
