With a large crowd planning to visit Long Kin West, I decided at the last minute to jump ship and look at Five Ways Pot. Apparently this was to the detriment of the Long Kin West trip as the bags were not clearly labelled!
Two other groups being out, we were left with the dregs of the rope & next to no karabinas. A quick trip home on the way to the cave fixed the karabina issue.
Having not done the cave before, I put the grid reference into my phone and it took me straight there, via some good bog, in which I nearly lost a leg.
Lukasz, who had done the cave before, did not initially recognise the entrance, but using the polished rock principle, we were soon inside the cave.
I had been told by various people that the head of the first pitch was awkward. I rigged it as a rebelay and there was not a problem.
We descended the impressive shoring and another pitch to Five Ways Chamber. We had a bit of a faff deciding which was the correct way on.
There was more faff at the bottom of the next pitch, where you have to climb up to drop down a body sized hole to gain the next pitch. I also dropped a sling down an off-route hole here, which Lukasz managed to fish out (much to my & Fran's surprise).
There was one more tight pitch head before the bottom of the cave, but all went well and we were soon looking at the grim passage at the bottom of the final pitch.
No-one was terribly keen on investigating it, until Matt stuck his head (and most of his body) into it and declared that it did not go.
We were soon on our way out, with Lukasz & Matt sharing the derigging.
I put a bit of tatt on the shoring pitch to make getting out easier.
The first pitch was not a problem on the way out, the biggest faff was getting the bags out.
The wind had got up while we were in the cave making the walk back unpleasant with driving showers including some hard bits.
We passed (apparently) Stocks Pot on the way back, which we had a quick look at.
We noticed some wear on one of our ropes on the way out of Five Ways, this was passed to the tackle master when we got back to the hut. He wasted no time cutting it but having looked at the core there did not seem to be much damage.
