Having not lead a trip in the mines of Nenthead before, I decided to have a go at something simple to start with.
We entered Smallcleugh and went straight to Handsome Mea Great Cross Vein and headed north west looking in several of the flats and going up some in-situ ropes.
We eventually reached Ballroom Flat, where we a had a play with the football before attempting to follow the Smallcleugh Cross vein to Whimsey Shaft. We were stopped by a collapse, apparently this is quite and old collapse. It required us to head back to Wheel Flat from where we went down Old Flatt Crosscut to regain Smallcleugh Cross Vein.
This took us via the Bridge of Mild Inconvenience to Whimsey Shaft. We descended two level from there into Proud's Flat where there are several interesting artifacts.
We then descended the aluminium ladder into Rampgill Level Hingingshaw Branch from where we followed the stream out of the mine passing Whiskey Bottle Junction and Brewery Shaft on the way.
The walls in Hangingshaw Branch were well decorated with flowstone in a variety of colours.
Thanks to Andy for the loan of the surveys.
