Rampgill via Brewery Shaft - 22 March 2026 24 Mar 2026 19:38 #21988

I was keen on an easy trip in Rampgill for the Sunday but the children had decided that we NEEDED to do the first 25m (or so) of Brewery Shaft.
Having obtained the keys we went up to the shed above Brewery Shaft. I rigged the pitch using a 33m rope. The beam above the pitch gave a nice hang, this was backed up to an RSJ at the side of the shed.
Having descended to the Rampgill level, it was easy to swing over to the railings and tie the rope off for the others.
As the SRT kits would not be required for the rest of the trip, we left them at the railing and set off for Scaleburn to look at the horse gin (whimsey).
On our way to look at the horse gin, we took the steps up to a higher level to admire some ancient graffitti and some good brick work.
We went back down to the horse level and went to the horse gin. Once it was thoroughly admired, we doubled back to Rampgill Cross Vein and headed on to Rampgill Vein.
We followed this into the Norpex workings and continued to the end of the Rampgill Vein where the passage closed down. Oggy investigated just about everything that was climbable and was followed by some of the rest of the team. There was no interest in the descent using a bit of tatt tied to a rail just before the end.
Having had our fill of exploring, we headed back to Brewery Shaft via Rampgill Engine Shaft and Whisky Bottle Junction.
At Brewery Shaft, Robin, Ros & I walked out while the others prusiked up to the shed to derig the rope.
Team: Ros, Robin, Ellie, Seren, Oggy & Dave.
Time: About 5.5 hours
