Trying to think of a suitable trip for Sunday, Alistair suggested Longcliffe Mine. Keith said if we are going to Longcliffe, we also needed to do Son of Longcliffe. So we had a plan.
Alistair got the code for the key box and told us that we only needed a 30m rope for the entrance as the rest was rigged.
We walked from the TSG past Peak Cavern and up onto the hillside above Speedwell. Using GPS we found the entrance fairly quickly and were soon heading down.
It was obvious that a lot of effort has been put into stabilising the cave with giant chicken wire holding back tonnes of rocks.
We headed steadily downwards until we ended up in a squalid crawl. We then headed back up and looked in most of the passages and climbs we could find.
There were odd bits of "Blue John" around and we saw the remains of a cart.

Time: About 2.5 hours

We then headed back round the hill to Son of Longcliffe.
This has a short entrance pitch and a stemple climb down to descending passage. This then dropped into another passage via a snug climb.
Continuing downhill we encountered a couple of muddy pools before a "coffin level" on the right. At this point we turned round and headed out.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
