This was going to be a trip to Black Shiver but the uncertain weather, plus already damp underground conditions forced us elsewhere.

Nobody else had been to Vesper's or Heron, so they seemed the sensible choice. The Vesper's entrance proved entertaining for some, but we all got through.

Lisa and I went until our bag of rope ran out (at the ledge half way down the main shaft). When the other rope didn't apppear, we retreated to find the other two sunbathing (=freezing!) on the surface, having decided it was a more sensible option that getting stuck in rifts.

A wander over to Heron (with hailstones) and all were persuaded underground once more. Water levels were about double \"normal\" and this made the pitches more interesting. We returned the way we'd come and wandered back down the road to the cars parked at Valley Entrance.

The day was rounded off nicely with Sticky Toffee Pudding all round in Inglesport Café.

Party: Paul Geddes, Lisa Wootton, Damian Weare (YSS), Charlie (Hades)
Time: Vesper's ~2 hrs, Heron ~1 hr

Oh my god they are trying to kill me ( a thought that crossed my mind a couple of times )
Vespers has a nice decorated passage to the top of the first pitch, once down the pitch its like putting a size 8 foot in a size 6 welly , its true me and Charlie turned round at the top of the second pitch but it was getting hard work putting on and taking off the srt kit and trying one way then another to get through, at one point I ended up stuck in the stream laying on my side and not being able to move till Charlie came back and said he went over at that bit so it was a quick crawl backwards then up and over  . it was a slow crawl back out and was only 15 mins till the rest joined us . I might even go back ONE day and try the rest of it after dropping a stone or two :side:

My main memory of Vespers is vowing to only ever go caving with people who were bigger than me.

Did you go over the top of the pitches in Heron and down in one nice drop or two separate drops?

Have you ever done this as a down one way and up the other? Would the top route pose a risk to people on the route beneath?

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
