Whilst a bigger team went off to do B.P.o.t.W. I went with El Presidente to have a look at a collectors item of Nigel's.
This was a Recce to see what it would be like to rig for a future archaeological scan.
We asked our permissions at the farmhouse and although up a steep hill in the heat of the day it was only half a mile away. We found it straight away underneath a small scar near the summit of Elbolton Hill.
With some interesting rigging from some stakes and the bolted end of the entrance gate and a scaff bar we were soon down into the main chamber - the site of excavations in the1880's of several seated neolithic burials, other human bones and those of bear and where Nigel is to return to scan the cavity as part of a current study.
Another pitch was rigged and descended to the sump, which was lovely and crystal clear, its 6 m long but the u bend syphon goes down 2m before going back to airspace and a pitch beyond, hence a very faded sign advising against attempting to free dive it, besides the water was freezing.
After a good look up the awkward climb we left the 73m long cave which far surpassed expectations and if I can borrow a tiny cylinder I might go back to look beyond the sump sometime.
Elbolton Hill is a reef knoll which is renowned for associations with Fairies, we did not encounter any little people but there are many tales of these mischievous creatures in the vicinity of this hill, which was also mined for lead.
Trip time about an hour.
