Having suggested this a couple of weeks ago and then abandoned it due to the snowy nature of the world at that time, Keith and I decided to give it a go today. I had done it once before, but it was new cave for Keith.
Expecting foul weather on Leck Fell, we changed at the hut before driving onto the Fell. As expected, the weather was less than pleasant, but we soon located the cave. Keith, being ready, set off with the first bag.
Remembering the awkward passage at the bottom of the ladder, I decided not to put on my SRT kit until I got to the head of the first pitch. It was a bit of a pain on the crawls and scaffolding climbs (that I had forgotten) having a bag and a separate SRT kit on the way down.
We soon got to the first pitch, which was already rigged. We descended the in-situ rope and then took a side tour to look at the Hay Waggon, which is well worth a visit.
Returning to the pitch we headed to the left (when facing away from the pitch) onto the Incedibles pitch (again already rigged), this dropped about 10m to a traverse to the third pitch (again pre-rigged). Descending this pitch we encountered a lot of water and an unpleasant looking squeeze in the water. This was as far as I had gone on my previous trip, and was to be this limit again today.
We headed quickly back up the in-situ ropes emerging in a brief gap between the horizontal rain showers, having used none of the rope we had packed.
Apparently the tightest bit is later in the cave during the crawl in the stream.
