Our former tackle master suggested a series of trips climbing the three peaks and descending their associated caves. One hill and cave per day.
A bank holiday weekend was selected for the event, so on Saturday a small group of us set off to do the Penyghent combination. We were joined on the walk by Mike & Jane, but we could not persuade them underground.
The weather was good for the walk up Penyghent from the dump, dropping the rope bags by the wall on the way up. We left Mike & Jane at the top and retraced our steps to the bags and then headed over to the cave.
As we approached we could see another group of cavers around the entrance, it turned out that they had a similar idea to us, but were going for the 3 peaks & pots in a single push and had already done Penyghent pot and were heading on to Whernside & King Pot! They told us that the cave was a bit wet but possible.
We quickly changed for caving & headed down, soon getting completely drenched, first going under the rock near the entrance, then in the long crawl before the shower bath at the first pitch.
It soon became apparent that we were not making good enough time to get to the sump and back before our call out & we were all getting very cold, so we headed out after the fourth pitch.
The weather took a turn for the worse on Sunday and did not look good for Monday, so we canned the rest of the event and did other trips instead.
