This trip was popular on the Whats App poll, possibly because we have not done it for a while due to issues with High Birkwith Farm.
We parked at Low Birkwith Farm and paid our dues before heading up the track to the Calf Holes entrance pitch.
We rigged the pitch starting at the second plate hanger using my spare rope. If you want to rig from the hanger next to the stile a 35m rope is required.
We all entered the cave, passing the easy deviation. A couple of the less experienced members were bottom lined.
We then went down the passage to the awkward section where you drop through into Browgill Cave. The was successfully passed by all the team members, some finding it easier than others.
A couple of us headed off to look at the waterfall pitch. A pitch I have yet to do in spite of having done the through trip many times.
We then headed over to the pitch bypass and climbed down using the in-situ ropes. Before standing near the exit of the cave admiring the view.
All that remained was to reverse the trip. This went well until we got to the connection between the caves. Andreas was unable to get up the tight section no matter what we did to help. Eventually it was decided that Paul would take him out of the lower exit while the rest of us completed the planned trip.
Having got back to the pitch, most of us went for a quick ascent but Lukas & Robin decided they had not done enough caving and went for a rummage upstream.
It was bitterly cold when we got out, so we quickly headed back to Low Birkwith Farm to change and head back to the hut, leaving Robin & Lukas to derig.

Team: Paul, Ros, Val, Robin, Lukas, Lukasz, Andreas, Dave R & Dave.
Time: About 3 hours

Thanks for co-ordinating and rigging, Dave. A lovely trip, short but varied, in great company.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
