With an excess of people intending to cave on Sunday, we decided to rig both routes in Rowten.
Three bags per side, most of the long ropes from the cellar, including a couple of the older, fatter ropes (it's good to give them an outing now & again). The cave seems to eat karabinas, we used all the ones on the rack and Gully route also had a few maillons.
The plan was for a swap over. The traditional Eyehole route into the Flyover route and the more contrived Big Gully route into Direct route.
Eyehole route has an excellent free hanging pitch while Big Gully route has some interesting rebelays.
Matt was keen to rig Eyehole route, so Damian rigged Big Gully route.
This want well until we got to the point where the intended routes crossed...
The final bag for the Big Gully/Direct route had been packed with an 80m rope instead of two 35m ropes and we also needed a short length for a traverse and another short length for an "easy" climb. My bit of tatt was used for the traverse and the "easy" climb was declared to be free climbable.
The rigger for the Eyehole/Flyover route missed the swing into the rift part way down the pitch and joined us on the Direct route. The riggers swapped bags and Damian went up to swing into the rift, while the other team rigged the Direct route.
All except Ros (who had decided to turn around at the cross over point) got to the sumps before we started a discussion about who was going which way out.
When the team going out of the Eyehole route got to the Bridge, we encountered a group from York university and had a bit of a wait for them to descend to the Bridge before we could do the final pitch.

Team: Damian, Ade, James, Dave, Ros, Rich, Lukas, Lukasz, Matt, Andy, Antonio & Matt
Time: About 4 hours.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
