After seemingly filling the whole of Kingsdale with cars, we split into two teams. Team A would go down the newly bolted route in Jingling, while Team B would rig down Rowten. We'd then swap and derig each other's.

Somewhat amazingly it all went (vaguely!) to plan. Team A zipped down Jingling making use of 4 new eco-anchors linking the surface rift route with the lateral cleft one. Team B made it to the bottom of Rowten (after the compulsory faff at the second rebelay). Special mention must be made of Gordon - I found him struggling to ascend with his footloop connected directly to his central maillon and his safety cord clipped to his upper jammer - tricky stuff! A bit of rearranging followed and we were soon back out.

A tow rope or two later and all the vehicles were back on the road. A short drive to the School ready for showers and some strange things that someone told me were deodorant, mascara and hair straighteners.

By far the most difficult part of the day - The AGM - followed and team Weare retreated home leaving everyone else to their excesses!

Team A: Alex, Sue, Paul & Damian
Team B: Keith, Pete, James & Gordon

Great trip, thanks to Keith and Damian for rigging and de-rigging. MMMMM yes that 2nd re-belay in Rowten - what fun.
Rowten - very impressive with a few tricky bits to contend with. Followed by a great night.

Excellent trips.
I knew as I started to walk up the hill towards the caves that I was not \"caving fit\", too much Christmas pud and no playing out for about a month. The new route into Jingling was a lot less exciting than the route I did last time, (hanging from a dodgy looking tree and then a swing into the window). The new route traverse was entertaining but not as \"interesting\" as the tree. Bottomed Jingling then struggled back up the ropes (definitely not fit) and them went a play on the first pitch of Rowton, I had a mini epic on the second rebelay, everything was either just too short or just too long. What fun especially as my every mistake was observed by the rest of the group on the surface. We decided that as time was running out and we had an AGM to go to that the first pitch was enough fun for one day. Out we came, and thankfully passed the rebelays in style.

Thanks for a good day

After rigging Rowten to the bottom and a quick look at the dive lines, the rest of my group were starting to flag a little bit :( so they decided they were'nt going to do Jingling.
So i made my way out then walked over and derigged Jingling

What can I say!
After James went down to the second re-belay and struggled .....Pete was second down and said he would make sure that he would not do the same... and then I had the same problem too! What is it about that 2nd re-belay??
Maybe it was something to do with my foot loop being wrong?! …. Damien said we should have all ‘stood in the loop’ to take our weight off and not used the hand jammer as we all did??
Anyway I got to the bottom, (honest Keith - it was a blue dive rope)
Enjoyed many of the quirky transfers from one rope to another, through gaps, along traverses etc.
Most entertaining on the way back up; as being the last one up there was no one to confer with as to why my foot loop seemed 'too long - or too short’ to work. LOL. I guess I mainly used my Pantene to get up the first pitch = fairly easily. And catch Pete up. (My foot loop did not seem much use! …wonder why??!!!#’@)
However after my taking too long in trying to pass the next deviation, Damian appeared and told me to ‘go down again!’ so we could sort my foot loop out.
After we both landed he explained that this was the ‘only place in the entire Dales where he did not think it would be possible to rescue someone’; so I ‘m glad we managed to sort it all out very quickly! by re attaching my foot loop to the right part of the mallion. They say ignorance is bliss, but I would n’t like to have had to do the next 100’ on just my Pantene. No doubt the anti Pantene crew are all going to jump in here??? LOL
A big THANK YOU to Keith for rigging and Damian for de rigging …….and rescuing me! –another lesson learnt. A great pot hole to do highly recommended a lot more to it than it looks from the surface. Look forward to completing the other one of the pair next time!

Although I did say that, I should add that I meant on my own with an unconscious casualty and no spare rope. The rebelays are just too offset to move myself and a casualty past them. Fortunately there aren't many rebelays like that!

I always use my jammer/footloop to pass the deviation in question. However on one occasion I had to abandon the jammer, rerig the y-hang and retrieve the jammer after we'd derigged. Be warned NEVER put two bits of rope in the jammer at once (well not unless it's really thin)

Sounds like a good warning! I don't think I would ever try to put two bits in, this rebelay in Rowten seems interesting enough to warrant a visit.

Good idea, when am I next going caving.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
