A new J. Thorpe dig with good prospects led me to a large popular cave somewhere near Ingleton this fine Sat morning. Met Alan Speight and J. thorpe at the entrance with 4 iron grids and a rake. Into the main chamber a turn to the left and the entrance to the secret dig. A 6ft pile of flood debris including huge logs, rocks, stone, sediment, leaves and plastic had been partially cleared the previous week allowing us entry to the Rift passage that led off to 'caverns measurless'
Hands and knees followed by flat out and an awkward squeeze led to a small chamber of ' hanging death'. Whilst examining the choke lugger (who at the time was clearing up behind me) tells me to 'be quiet, Alan is calling' Alan was behind Lugger and had just reported the good news 'Something has fallen into the passage and blocked our exit'
With this rather alarming news we shffled back down the passage to the obstruction. A large log. This was removed after about 15 mins of work by lugger and Alan. We then decided to build a fire the passage blowing well. Hopefully the smoke would apear on the hillside giving up more secrets.
Feeling a bit like Norbert Casteret we went a gathering and returned with suitable 'fire making apperatus'. Plastic was required to make smoke so plastic bags and a bucket were added to the Fire. Lugger started the fire and pushed it down the passage. It was giving off a tremedous amount of noxious fumes, most of which, was taken down passage with the draught. Some, however, rose up the rift to the left and out into main chamber causing a dreadful smell and greatly reducing visability. As we made our exit out of the cave, coughing and spluttering we were greeted by a party of 6-7 kids (and parent) in caving gear, waiting to enter the cave:(
We did not see any smoke rising from the fell packed our kit off and left the dig for another day.
