IBBETH PERIL – Dentdale
Driving towards Dent the car park is on the left, when I say car park it’s more like a large gravel area enough for 10 cars, no pay and display :)

Follow the track downstream past the waterfall and head down into the river bed. The entrance should be covered up by a makeshift gate. Slide in and a short crawl into an impressive cavern.
Plenty of areas to explore, a nice climb up a short waterfall and a long passage to explore. Bottom right of the cavern area allowed us to go deeper, found myself getting lost (again) on the way back.
Looks like the water level could reach roof level.
Didn’t manage to find other entrance (Ibbeth 2)

Underground for approximately 2 hours.

Nigel, Richard, Alex & Susan, Black Alex and myself.

ILLUSION POT KINGSDALE
After Ibbeth Peril we jumped into the car and Alex senior drove us to Kingsdale and illusion. Much the same as sunday nights trip, the sump was more or less dry a walk down the big rift in both direction we marvelled at the formatios which included orange stal, hellictites and some nice sraws. Fun at the traverse and then out

Hi Nigel, glad you guys didn't do Birks Fell in the end cos despite a couple of weeks settled weather the thunderstorm and torrent we had here on Sunday was truly awesome. You say that Ibbeth Peril looks like it might flood. Look in the entrance and see the debris and it will give a good indication of the fact that it floods badly and to the roof. So does Ibbeth Peril 2. Both entrances are pretty well at stream level and should only be descended in settled weather cos the whole river goes down there. A good trip though and an impressive chamber so close to the entrance. Have not been to Illusion but from your reports it certainly seems a really interesting trip.

Its a bit scary when you type in the name of a cave you have just done and this appears.

Good cave though!

Bit those mad canoe folk would change there mind if they saw the pile of rock below that waterfall. Yes a big hole to plunge then one hell of a mound of rocks to break your head on.

Thanks for the warning on the dent system. Maybe wait a few years for a dry spell.:)

The CRO log for 11 May 2008 is well worth a look! tinyurl.com/2d3n8ey (page 6).

Very telling photos there Richard and perhaps the kind that ought to have a place on a lot of hut walls to indicate to visitors from outside the region just what can happen in some 'novice' caves. To Pete and others, dont let my words of caution or the vid that Alex posted put you off Ibbeth though. In the right conditions its a great little trip with some lovely pretties as well. I have taken a whole group of kids down there (not just my own) while their parents enjoyed a glass of wine and a picnic by the waterfall (including as I recall a good deal of added protein thanks to the midgie problem!). The kids all loved it and was a great day followed by a good splash around in the river afterward.

I've been put off Ibbeth Peril since seeing the pics in the Caving Practises and Equipment book edited by Dave Judson.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
