What a turn out for a mid week trip, better than a weekend :)
8 of us in total had a nice evening ferreting around this old derbyshire lead mine, second time for some of us. Also drilled and put some Y hangs on a couple of the pitches, thanks to the use of the YSS drill.
Still lots to see and still lots of potential to find other stuff in there.
Trip time 4hrs
Paul Geddes, Gordon Aitken, Nigel Steel, Stu Anderson, Column Walsh, James Blake, Christine Wilson, Keith Mason

Cheers for sorting it Keith.

Mines are not usually on my hot spot of places to visit, but the relics and that stairway were well worth it.

www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/lead-inventories.pdf

www.pdmhs.com/PDFs/ScannedBulletinArticles/Bulletin%2015-3%20-%20Iron%20Mining%20in%20the%20Peak%20District.pdf

The first link has some interesting classification.

The second: page 11 bottom right column has mention of a Raddlepit but that GR is about 1km SW of the mine we were in.

The first link has the correct GR for our mine; however their is an entry for a Moss Rake West End whose GR corresponds with T. Fords "Raddlepit". I assume the mineral rake traverses between the two?

Raddle is apparently another name for ochre. Ford says of his original "Raddlepit" or Moss Rake West End that he doesn't know what was mined there.

Excellent trip Keith, some fabulous artifacts and great company, the entrance pitch and the climbs were great fun, had me smiling all the way back to Yorkshire. Excellent research Stu :)

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
