With Mike's knee still not up to caving, on our recent visit up to the YSS with my other club, Mike and I again ventured out on our bikes.

On Saturday, we cycled from the hut down to Settle then over to Malham Tarn via the Pennine Bridleway. From there we picked up Mastiles Lane over to Bordley Farm before looping back via Gordale Scar, Malham (including teashop break), Kirkby Malham ann then back by road to Settle and the hut. Fantastic 48 km trip, about half off road on wonderful old byways and improved tracks.

Sunday dawned wet and 'orrible but as a friend was coming over from Bordley way we had to do something. So setting off from the hut in the pouring rain, we headed up to Feizor Nick on another lovely old track. By the time we got to Feizor the weather had improved greatly so we headed into Austwick (with a brief dunk in the ford for Mike), up Town Head and then nearly intol Clapham before heading up Long Lane and over into Crummack Dale for a fantastic descent on a grassy track and so back to the hut.

What kind of bikes have you got? they look like unicycle wheel's!

All my other friends seem to have caught the 'Roadie' Disease, anything more than 5k that's not at a trail centre has got to be on tarmac for them now

Hi

They are Airnimal Black Rhinos and you are right, very small wheels,. 20 inches. They are folding mountain bikes with Rohloff hubs....a real pleasure to ride and despite having small wheels and fairly slick tyres we are really enjoying our off road stuff in the Dales. Personally, I am not into the real roughty-toughty mountain trail things but do like getting off road onto old tracks as well as bowling along on quiet roads. Hoping to do some easy off road stuff in Switzerland this summer.

We should be bringing the bikes along for the Presidents weekend for some more off road fun.

The Rohloff 14 speed hub gear is the biggest factor in the price for the Black Rhino spec. The alternative White Rhino was originally specified with derailleur gears but now comes by default with the Shimano Alfine 8 speed hub which is fraction of the price of a Rohloff hub.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
