Long Kin West
Roy, Ann and Pete
Sunday 10th July 2011
Drove through Clapham and headed onto the Ingleton on the old road, parked and headed up hill. I would not kit up before the forty or so minute walk up. Once over the first gate on right (it has a built in ladder) follow the path the best you can. Round a bend to the right and there is a fork, take the right fork but walk in a straight line (depending on the night before). To your right the landmark of two gable ends of a once building are clearly visible and on the left the peak of a large hill, obviously weather and clouds dependent. Once you are between these two landmarks you should be at the entrance to Long Kin West. Be aware the drop is straight down and there is not fence is surrounding the holes around the entrance. Also a small piece or L shaped iron stick out of the ground makes a good point of reference.
Face the shaft with Ingleton in front and you have a choice of two descents, both dropping around ninety meters. Roy rigged the left only to find rope rub as he descended down and as we were using nine mil rope thought better of it. So up he came and rigged the right hand side pitch. Two nice Y hangs and we made the first forty meters down.
The ledge which is covered in loose rocks has two drops. Roy rigged up the one with an obvious ledge and a deviation about forty meters down then straight down. Be careful as the rock face is loose and we had a small avalanche as the rock come away from the rock face and made one hell of a noise.

Thankfully no one was near and no damage was done as Ann and Roy were still de-rigging.
Small squeeze and a traverse over a long drop to the final pitch of thirty meters, this lead down to a boulder choke and what looks like a dig. Sorry the café was closed, so chocolate bars consumed I headed up, followed by Roy with Ann de-rigging. At the bottom of the big pitch daylight can be seen, this makes a great climb up. Bags passed up and out I came into the sunshine followed by Roy and Ann.
Excellent cave system for a small party of three or so, and great fun if you like long pitches. Also a great walk down with amazing views.
Quick thank you to Roy and Ann for supplying their own kit and doing all the hard work.
