The apostrophe challenge
The sub title should have read, watch out for those cheeky apostrophe's', it would not fit into the above title :( Trip started with a magnificent, midge free walk to the entrance, one reason to thank the Lord, for all this rain and a stiff breeze. Plan of action; find the route (with survey in hand) to Eureka Junction. All went to plan as we found the entrance, plan went 'tits up', thereafter. Down climbs along to 7m pitch, no problem. Brian takes the right passage and into the crawl that follows Oxford Pot route. I know what you are thinking at this point... “where are all those f*"#/ng apostrophes”. We got back on course and dropped into Broadway, followed the stream into Oxford Circus.
From here, Nigels' mate (apostrophe alert) looked at the survey, a left turn into Shower bath passage and a fine waterfall to soak us to the skin. Past confusion corner, on our right, we continue left towards spout hall. Had Brian continued on his adventures below the pitch he would have met me at Confusion Corner. This is one of the county/Oxford confluences (keep your eye on those apostrophes). We ventured into spout hall, Brian going down the spout and receiving a thorough soaking. Nigel climbs up a couple of feet on the right and finds a chamber. With Brian’s help, a dry route into Spout hall is noted and taken, An Oxbow on the left is well decorated, Nigel casts his grateful eyes upon these magnificent pretties and... wait for it...looks at a cluster of cave pearls, the first he has ever seen. It gladdened his heart so much, he hastened on with inspired pace. (not like Nigel, i hear you all cry).
Up poetic justice and into a crawl. So i do not alarm those of you who know, yes, Nigel did make an epic of Poetic Justice! He does not like to disappoint.
To the right Brian noted a pitch, so we continued left. The crawl was, at best, very, very tight and a pleasure to complete. I popped up into the low Battle of Britain Chamber. The pleasure was intensified by that cruel act of nature which allows one to sit in comparative comfort, whilst listening to those behind struggle through the squeeze. Unfortunately my pleasure was short lived. This was for two reasons. Firstly, i did not want to go back through the choke, so i began poking around the chamber, trying to find a way on. The second and possibly most alarming, when Brian shouted up (through the boulder choke) “Nigel i have moved that huge, boulder and blocked your exit”. Thank god Brian had the stamina to remove the huge boulder and continue his difficult push through the choke and up the very comfortable squeeze into the chamber. At this point we could hear one loud stream and two, possibly three, smaller streams. We followed the noise to the robust stream and found ourselves in ... yes, you in the know have guessed... Spout chamber! At this point we called it a day and made our exit into a not unusual cloudy and overcast day.
This was a most enjoyable excursion. To be continued next weekend.
Players: Brian Cullen, Nigel Steel
Count up the correct number of apostrophes and Nigel will treat the first to a pint.
Damian is, of course, exempt. He has been voted onto the judging panel (All judges receive a pint in payment).

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
