Self & Pete decided to de stress by doing a bit o' cavin' this weekend.
Saturday Rained a bit all last night; forecast today was for ‘rain later’.

We needed to choose something which was within:
our ability (so it did n’t leave us with much choice)
our limited resources (as we did n’t have access to YSS kit this weekend)
Bit of a sad collection really - 3 short ropes, precious few mallions crabs etc, no tackle bag. [Perhaps we should of borrowed Lionel’s?]
After checking with Pete how many screwgates he had and receiving the answer “1”, we decided it might be a good idea to call to Inglesport to purchase some more (£6 for DNA).
.
We considered Valley Entrance, Yordas, Bull Pot before agreeing on Sunset.
Decided this was at our starter level for rigging practise without too much risk.

Time in 11.30
Time out 3.30.

Did n’t do final pitch as we ran out of rope and time.

Had a great time working out what to do etc. And were very satisfied with the results. Took it in turn to rig.
Took for ever but enjoyed every minute of it!
Good job no one was waiting whilst we rigged tho’ LOL

Bit surprised to see an incoming party: 2 adults, 4 kids with polypropolyne rope (perhaps only for handline?] coming down….. But guy had been caving for 30 years so what do I know. He had a more normal looking rope wrapped round him too …. But he still had two short pitches to do before the final one.

At the end of the first 'pitch' I’ve never seen Pete move so fast in a cave - when I (mistakenly) told him ‘we are a bit close to our call out time’. :side:
….. But it was funny when we got out of the cave and found we still had an hour to go.

It was good for building cave fitness tho’ (gonna have to try this one on Nigel).

Great day, great company. :)

Look forward to the next one.

[Gonna take a while to reach Damian speeds tho’] :S

Well done, gents - exactly what people ought to do.

Did you rig the climbs/pitches low or "over the top"?

When you say final pitch are you talking the about 50ft one or the one after going up that rope and down the spiral?

Hi .......Damian....... High...... LOL

Alex: Our last 15m pitch we rigged was the Next to the final pitch.
The actual final pitch as you say is the 50' one - which we had a look at but did n't have rope/time to do.

Q: we could n't quite work out how to rig the end of the traverse line on this. Which was horizontal bolts for first three P bolts, (which I rigged as longer and longer alpines as we were going down).
But then the last P bolt was across the passage and dropped about 3m to next P bolt /Y hang point. (Which is an old bolt/ plus P bolt very close together).

If we had rigged it best fit/straight line from start then the final Alpine would have been 3m long. And difficult to derigg? I had started the line going down longer and longer Alpines.....
Luckily the walls were close enough to chimney down. And you could put your descender on this final bit of the traverse line as extra safety.

Pete was saying 'that's no good as it's only one bolt'. I was claiming it was still continuing the traverse line? Would this be right?

- If it counted as a pitch then I've rigged my first rebelay! - Left 1 m in loop to stand up in anyway.

Nah, thats not what I meant the 50' one is not the final pitch there is another one after a climb up and then some sort of spiral to the final pitch which I cant remeber the depth of I have never been down that one either.

We really should plan more and check the rigging guides, but as it was more SRT practise / fun it never happened.
Great day out was had.
Cheers Mate.

There is no reason that you could not have used club kit, you are both YSS members, It's there to be used.
Glad you had a great trip.

Hi Stuart,
I appreciate we can normally use the YSS kit,

Q Do we need a key or is it by combination now? -

Due to the cycling weekend, we were keeping clear that particular weekend

Q Is there a rigging guide at the YSS?

I know the answer to the first one its both.

Not sure about the second one, I use my other club's library for all my rigging needs.

There is a Rigging Guide 3 in the cellar, but nothing else ... it has been suggested before.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
