Went up to Ireby on saturday with 3 friends to have a look at Duke Street and try a bit of fancy cave photography

The day went well, I rigged Ding and Dong, my first time rigging (no one else knew that untill after) and eventually we were down bell, pussy, well and rope in into the surprisingly roomy duck.

Duke street was impressively large and a welcome change.

After messing about with flashes and other such nonsense we realised we were a bit behind on time so I set off out as a 'Runner' to cancel our call out, and between me and the last of our party coming back something went slightly wrong

We lost a Caver!

Dan, who was supposed to be behind me, was quite a lot slower on the pitched and went AWOL somewhere on leck fell.

We searched up the lane and back to the Pot and about two and a half hours later he turned up in a car having found a farm and begged for a lift!

Trip time: 6hrs caving 2 hrs searching for missing Dan

Party: Me, Sarah, Rob and Dan

Interesting Anthony. As Chris Bonnington, or was it Doug Scott, once said 'reaching the summit is a very dangerous time because one thinks the job is done and the peak in the bag, this can lead to fatal mistakes as you are led into a false sence of secuirity'. Sounds like there are a few words of wisdom in there dude.
Glad you are all safe and well.

Hi

I believe that the cavers that got lost coming out of Ireby and ended up in Dent may be members of my other club (CCCC)....it was the middle of winter and white out conditions. What was funny about that story was that having got to Dent, the misplaced cavers rang through to the rescue service to say they were safe but shortly after, the rescue people rang back just to check that these were the cavers they were looking for since they could not believe someone coming out of Ireby would have ended up in Dent!

I was not even aware of a path going right. Wierd, but not the first time I have heard people getting lost up there. Perhaps a sign post at the entrance saying this way to Ireby layby.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
