GB Cave
Anxious to dispell the myth that Mendip caves are all rubbish, it seemed appropriate to go to the other good one following our Swildon's trips the day before. So it was that we headed to GB bright and early on Sunday morning.
After a typically short Mendip walk, we were soon underground and appreciating the size of the Main Passage. We made a diversion up the slope to view probably the only car in a cave (!), before carrying on down the passage, crossing over the Bridge and taking the pretty route to the bottom of the cave. After a couple of wrong turns (sorry!) we made it to the start of the Ladder Dig. This is reached by an upward climb, and once the ladder was installed, everyone was quickly at the top ready for a bit of Mendip crawling
The Ladder Dig breaks through into both Great Chamber and Bat Passage, and it is pleasing to see that the excellent formations are still largely intact ... although why some idiot has found itnecessary to put their muddy handprints all over some of the pristine stuff in Bat Passage was beyond us!
Once back at the base of the ladder, there was nothing left but to climb up, up, and up some more to the entrance. Another excellent trip, but these Mendip caves really are steep!
