It was really a Hades weekend, but I reckon there were enough YSS members there to justify its inclusion here.

Friday night in the Helwith was a busy one and we retreated slightly reluctantly sometime after midnight before we could be dragged into doing anything too silly!

Saturday morning dawned and, with the arrival of Rich Rae, we were now 8. In the event 3 decided to mutiny and go to Valley Entrance, so we were down to 5 for Pen-y-Ghent Pot trip. Sam had been down half way a few months ago and I had been to the bottom only once before about four years ago. Apart from that everyone was a PYG crawl virgin.

I am pleased to report that the crawl was much less grim than I remembered (I did it in 10 mins!) and we were soon at the bottom of the 4th pitch and the start of the pre-rigged section. The pre-rigged ropes were a little old and frayed in places, but we didn't let it hold us back and were at the bottom in good time. A few minutes were spent burying some of Jason's diving gear for him, and we were off out again.

A fine trip in a fine cave - if it had a big, technical pitch somewhere towards the bottom it really would have everything.

Party: Damian Weare, Sam Clifford, Richard Rae (YSS) plus Pete Mason & Maurice McCabe (Hades)

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
