Rowten Pot: Gulley Route

A chat in the pub the previous evening had ascertained that I had not yet done the new(ish) Gulley Route in Rowten and, unbelievably, Chris had never actually made it to the bottom of the Big Pitch by any route. That was all the excuse we needed to head up there the next morning.

The Gulley Route is a newly-pioneered SRT route down the traditional ladder route of Rowten. It gives a totally different perspective on Rowten and would make for an excellent exchange trip. In fact, combined with the two different routes down the bottom half of the cave, you could have an excellent figure of 8 exchange without touching the same bit of ground twice.

The only thing to be wary of is a couple of rebelays on the new route down the Main Shaft where they rub slightly against fairly rough rock, so probably not a route for hoards to travel.

Party: Chris & Damian

Arguably. To be honest I'd say it was actually nice, economic bolting and that, provided you are careful, it's fine. Novicey types who don't fend off from walls etc will cause problems, but you could argue that's their fault, not the bolters'.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
