Black Moss Pot
Alan Speight, Richard Mercer, Sam Clifford

Another piece of scaff rebarred in and shoring inserted partway.
About 75 bags of muck removed.
Bit of turf replacement done on the spoil heap.

Now several trips without finding evidence of previous diggers so we are definitely where only the stupidly optimistic go. :silly:

Total depth dug 28 ft ( or over 8 Metres )

I would call it poetically: 8 meters extension :)

First not a lot of point calling it anything yet,as we are still digging downwards,It could well be that the pitch is 20 meters deep or even more before we get any horizontal development,At the moment it is possible that the cave system could be 80 m deep and 5 k long to the nearest know resurgence - but thats the theory - We may give up long before then
We can call it what we want but until we put something in writing and produce a survey no one will know about it.
If anyone else wants to help out with the dig then let me know.

I did post yesterday he should call it 'Firemans Shaft' because of the fire guard over the entrance but it must have somehow gone walk abouts in cyber space

Wouldn't it be great if you dug into some massive phreatic passage that connected into the 3 counties! :woohoo:

30/7/2012.
A four person team of Mercer,Parker,Speight & Clifford. - A lot of rubble removed 135 bags, another scaffold pole inserted and the wooden boards knocked down. now down to 30 ft at the deepest point.
06/08/2012.
Only a three person team today - Sam Clifford out on the rigs,A considerable amount of time was spent closing up 2nd dumping site and completing the returfing and landscaping.
Next a large dry stone wall was constructed, and tipping site number 3 started. A quick trip to the bottom brought out 24 bags of spoil. but during our lunch break the heavens opened and the cave started to flood, thus preventing any more work.
In sumery we have been working at this sight for 1 year and got down 30 ft - Who will give up first us or the cave? B)

I have been Pondering this while at work and I have a theory :woohoo:

The entrance is at around 320meters ASL

Possible 'resurgences' and by that I mean when it floods the water joins an already active system lower down, ultimately a flooded bedding system and surfaces not too far away at one of the springs which seem to concentrate around the 250m ASL contours (on both sides of the valley)

So that would mean you might have a 70 meter deep (not accounting for the dip in the bedding, or how deep the water is actually coming up from the springs) system with a distance of up to a mile

All this is of course from an inexperienced caver who was bored at work. :silly:

Keep going Alan, the potential is there, it is a nice dig in a beautiful location. You could consider hiring the bunk cottage which is 100m from dig for an alternate YSS weekend, walking, digging, barbies etc could be good fun, 3 caves within a stones throw, Scardey cow, Black Moss and Preachers. An occaision to get some good work done.

Monday 13th August 2012 - Only two of us today Richard Mercer & Alan Speight.
First job was to mix two large bags of Postcrete and pour into the wall to give it additional strength.Richard then topped it off with some large capping stones, whilst I went underground and started filling bags.I filled 26 bags which were brought to the surface, then it was Richards turn- In total 78 bags were brought to the surface. About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
