A 4 man team set out to this infamous pot, though one (Gordon) was there for moral support only.

The cave was located easily with Ian's GPS, which was a good job as it was a lot further across the fell then I thought.

We entered the cave with enough gear to rig the entire cave. We also had to bring out rope that had been abandoned in there by a different club. At the third pitch Ruth decided to turn back. After ensuring she got up the first pitch okay me and Ian continued to the bottom.

We got to the bottom of the blackrift only to turn back at the pitch dropping down into North chamber due to time constraints.

The journey out was tough, there were 4 mammoth sized bags between 2 people for the top 3 pitches and entrance crawl (Though Ruth was there for the crawl, see posts below). I ferried most of the bags one at a time up stream while Ian de-rigged each pitch, all to try and save time as we were cutting it close to call out time.

Trip time 7 hours?

Well done chaps - sounds hard? Was there lots of tight crawling?

Well done Ruth for having a go!- Did you have long to wait on the surface?

What time did you get back to the car?

Ian did you use the sat nav to find the car then? I Thought you would be able to 'spot' it with Alex's new light :pinch:

I actually got lost on the way back from the third pitch, I took a right turn and ended up at a three way junction convinced that's the way we had come... oh man those passages  Anyway thought I best go back to the pitch and wait for Alex and Ian as I didn't have a clue how to get out after much crawling and getting bruised, so I walked on the spot for two hours singing to keep warm in the dark... I actually had quite a good time and kept in high spirits...only to find when meeting back up with them that I was 5 minutes away from the entrance! What a div!! :(

It twas strange to see you at the top of the first pitch. In retrospect, I should have been more responsible, ignored you saying "Ill be alright" and come up with you anyway when you were leaving and shown you the way out rather than just to the top of the pitches, incase something happened (As I should with anyone soloing thier way out), but I am no cave leader. (As there was just a crawl I did not think anything would). So its partly my fault :(

I also did not realise there were any other passages that could be confused for the way out. The only passage I recalled passing on the way in was a tight inlet where I thought no one in thier right mind would crawl up.... I remember thinking on the way in "Should I look in there, nah its tight (even for me) so I can't be bothered".

Well done in pushing it though lol and thanks for helping with the bags.

Anyway as for tightness apart from the passage Ruth explored the only moderately tight place is a bit of passage just before Blackdub. Other than that its just a crawling/stooping height uneven and wet passage.

'I walked on the spot for two hours singing to keep warm in the dark'

'That gals got guts'

Is that why its called 'Black Shiver' Doh

3 o'clock! - glad I did n't wait - thought you were thinking it would be one o'clock :side:

Ian I can recommend Meregill. I went there last year with Keith and alexr - needs to be dry though. I'm definately up for that! :)

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
