1st Party: Stuart W, Keith, Paul, Alex(Lionel), Alex. Guide Dave Wilson
2nd Party: Mike, Jane, Gordon (S&A) Susan, Alan. Guides Tim Palmer & Dewi LLoyd
Trip time approximately 5 hours?

Met our hosts the North Wales team near the quarry. Got changed split into two parties.

Walked up to the cave entrance , a 10 minute easy walk. Went under the footbridge to check for Trolls - and keep within the cave access agreements, not to cross any fences.

Entrance halfway up a banking opposite.

Crawled in but straightaway able to stand up and move around. Loads of mine passages going off everywhere but way on fairly obvious, until major fork. We took the right hand route 10 metres to the pitch.
A ladder descent of about 6 metres leads down to a bigger chamber with a way to the left which we explored to some pretties at the end. Lots of other passages were also explored to ensure we saw everything and we didn’t clash with the first party in a crawl near the end where the dig was.

Susan and Alan explored an abandoned dig which our guide explained was gated whilst the digger was working to prevent other diggers working.
This dig will be superseded by the new dig and it’s also likely it even connects vertically with another part of the cave.

After Susan and Alan re-joined us we met the first party at the start of the crawl. Only took about 15 minutes? Not too bad as, although body sized low, it was bedding plane wide in most places.

Arrived at the dig, Alan commented it was fantastic how it looked like a scene from WWI –sandbag walls keeping back even more sandy spoil in steps.

Alan decided/couldn’t resist helping out saying that 'we should move some spoil already bagged up at the face and back of the dig'.
We moved approximately 15 bags?
We brought a battery out of the cave which had been used to ventilate the dig face via a car fan and 80m of dryer hose!

Strangely the crawl on the way back didn’t seem half as bad despite the battery. I guess psychologically we knew what we were in for and knew we could fit through?!

Anyway soon back to surface and a lovely sunny day. The first party had come out an hour before us.

A lovely trip, very informative and patient guides – a big thank you to all involved.

regards,
Good trip well organised TVM

The trip we did Sunday, Ogof Hesp Alyn (OHA)

4 of us went down the cave situated next to the riverbed - (Gorden Ritchie, Gorden Weston, Gorden (sue) and Mike from North Wales)

Me Gorden Ritchie went in first. The entrance was a 6m shaft which is climbable with care but we laddered it going down, Gorden & Gorden followed.

Easy going though mainly crawling through puddles brought us to the first major chamber. Mike was careful to point out the big obvious passage on our left so we did not take it on the way out as Gorden is prone to getting lost. The first obstacle was a slippery broken 5m rope climb into a big rift. Much more walking passage led to flat out passage which broke out into walking passage with another important junction at which we turned left.

The next obstacle after a short free-climbable up pitch was some very clear (until we dipped our wellies in) and very deep water which required careful traversing to avoid a drowning or at least a severe wetting, Gorden certainly did not like the water.

Shortly afterwards we came to a broken 25 meter pitch, climbable apparantly. After this was another climb over a overhang, thankfully equipped with an SRT rope as Gorden would not have managed, neither would have Gordon.

Below another overhanging but thankfully easier climb we dropped down the fun began. A nice mud slide quickly led to the first pitch, with a knotted rope going down that the mad Welsh use. Thankfully again there was some muddy SRT rope to descend, below more muddy slippery going led to another pitch down a mud slope, and then another back up another mud slope. (Anyone spotting a theme here?). I had trouble getting up again as could not decide whether to prussic or try and climb up and ended up doing neither very quickly.

A pool and more mud led us to a preposterous climb down a 30ft deep muddy rift. Again SRT rope currently in place, thankfully as the roped climb alternative looked suicidal! I think my words to Mike at this point was "You mad f****r" when he told me he used to climb it. Getting to the bottom I realised I had run out of rope and had to fight my way up a mud bank to a knotted hand line, this little climb was the hardest part of the trip to me, no purchase what so ever!

Qucikly afterwards we reached the sump which was not drained enough to allow entry, to Mike's and Gorden's disappointment. All that was left was a slippery slidey exit up all the s***e. No one was brave enough to dunk into the water to clean off. After the water I shot off out as I thought Gordon Wallman may not have wanted to wait for me to clean my gear, according to Gordon.

A sporting trip yes, but not one I would like to repeat anytime soon. Apparently its graded 5 I would'nt go that far but if you had to climb all the pitches like they did in the old days then yes it warrants it.

Thanks to Gorden (Alex) Wallman for organsing it.

To keep the record accurate, I was in the first group.....we visited the dig first where Lionel and Stuart did some sand bag moving while the rest of us sat and watched!. We then met up with the 2nd group after reversing the crawl etc (definitely shorter on the way out!) and went on to look at the pretties before exiting the cave and returning the the cars to wait for the 2nd group to finish their explotations and digging practice.

From Lionel's description of OHA (Ogof Hesp Alyn) I am glad I chose the alternative Sunday trip into nearby Poacher's, a much gentler Grade 2 cave. The entrance was a small hole in a cliff next to the path to OHA. Immediately inside the entrance we had a somewhat narrow pitch of 5 m to descend on a ladder before a short crawl on a solid floor. Soon after we reached the first sandbanks and then had a very pleasant trip first in a dry passage and later in the streamway (which smelt somewhat unpleasantly of slurry) through the main chamber (where we helped to remove some graffiti on the walls) to the furthest point of the cave. The return trip involved some gratuitous crawly alternatives, including a muddy tube....fun to enter and slide down but somewhat harder to get out of!

Trip time...about a couple of hours

Ogof Hesp Alyn (OHA) is a resurgance cave and hence all the mud, it all floods up from below (lower levels) and flows out of the entrance which we used. It was quite a trip and negotiating the mud hazards especially tiring. I think it would be a grade 5 trip if you traverse the whole cave behond the sumps ( >10 hours), where we just went to the first perched sump which is about 600meters of passage where the whole place is around 1200m long.

Selected caves, when I read it in the car after the trip grades what we did to sump 1 as 5 and listed those climbs as pitches too.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
