The trip we did Sunday, Ogof Hesp Alyn (OHA)
4 of us went down the cave situated next to the riverbed - (Gorden Ritchie, Gorden Weston, Gorden (sue) and Mike from North Wales)
Me Gorden Ritchie went in first. The entrance was a 6m shaft which is climbable with care but we laddered it going down, Gorden & Gorden followed.
Easy going though mainly crawling through puddles brought us to the first major chamber. Mike was careful to point out the big obvious passage on our left so we did not take it on the way out as Gorden is prone to getting lost. The first obstacle was a slippery broken 5m rope climb into a big rift. Much more walking passage led to flat out passage which broke out into walking passage with another important junction at which we turned left.
The next obstacle after a short free-climbable up pitch was some very clear (until we dipped our wellies in) and very deep water which required careful traversing to avoid a drowning or at least a severe wetting, Gorden certainly did not like the water.
Shortly afterwards we came to a broken 25 meter pitch, climbable apparantly. After this was another climb over a overhang, thankfully equipped with an SRT rope as Gorden would not have managed, neither would have Gordon.
Below another overhanging but thankfully easier climb we dropped down the fun began. A nice mud slide quickly led to the first pitch, with a knotted rope going down that the mad Welsh use. Thankfully again there was some muddy SRT rope to descend, below more muddy slippery going led to another pitch down a mud slope, and then another back up another mud slope. (Anyone spotting a theme here?). I had trouble getting up again as could not decide whether to prussic or try and climb up and ended up doing neither very quickly.
A pool and more mud led us to a preposterous climb down a 30ft deep muddy rift. Again SRT rope currently in place, thankfully as the roped climb alternative looked suicidal! I think my words to Mike at this point was "You mad f****r" when he told me he used to climb it. Getting to the bottom I realised I had run out of rope and had to fight my way up a mud bank to a knotted hand line, this little climb was the hardest part of the trip to me, no purchase what so ever!
Qucikly afterwards we reached the sump which was not drained enough to allow entry, to Mike's and Gorden's disappointment. All that was left was a slippery slidey exit up all the s***e. No one was brave enough to dunk into the water to clean off. After the water I shot off out as I thought Gordon Wallman may not have wanted to wait for me to clean my gear, according to Gordon.
A sporting trip yes, but not one I would like to repeat anytime soon. Apparently its graded 5 I would'nt go that far but if you had to climb all the pitches like they did in the old days then yes it warrants it.
Thanks to Gorden (Alex) Wallman for organsing it.
