Set off to meet Brian and the exhaust fell off at start of A59. Dropped car in village railway station car park and caught the train to Harrogate for rendezvous with Brian. Slipped into Bullpot farm Friday evening to find we were sharing with students from Glasgow uni. No rain on Sat morning so trip down Borehole was on. Always fancied looking at Mottorsheads chamber and now was the chance. Found entrance in Left bank of Easegill about 50m below pool sink. Inside clean washed limestone and two 3m climbs, the cave looked promising and interesting. But the crawling soon started, and went on and on and on, mainly hands and knees with plenty of flat out sections over cobbles to stop us moaning too much about easy caving. At one point we stood up but thankfully this was just an aven, the crawling continued.
When we did stand the passage was narrow and winding with plenty of stooping, thankfully we missed the entrance to Galaxy passage. passed some excellent stal and climbed into the roof for a traverse to the pitch of 17m. Belay was an iron scaffold pole wedged across the passage. Brian wrapped a sling around a boulder as backup tied a knot and muttered something about not telling Damian. Nice pitch lands us in a chamber the continuing passage is narrow and winding with sections on (yes you have guessed) hands and knees. Towards the end of this section there is a nice clean washed stal floor. last section is standing we were soon in Mottorsheads chamber. Nice and quiet part of the cave, dry chamber with a high wall consisting of clay and boulders looking down onto the passage towards 4 ways junction. Brian went for a look whilst i ate 2 chocolate bars and had a look at the digs in the chamber. I then joined Brian for more crawling, my knees were begining to show their age. Brian continued along a low crawl into Eccles bypass and came back before braking into lower T piece passage (Pool Sink).
This was a very interesting part of the cave, some passages had beautifull stal and floors of straws that had moulded together with flowstone...stunning. The way back was greeted with pain on the knees and a hearty reccomendation that Nailers would be the kneepad of choice next time we pass this way. I had the miss fortune of missing a junction on the way out and continued down a "tortuous" passage to Blissfull Aven but realised the errors of my way before too much pain was inflicted on the already black and blue knees. A fine trip with something for everyone (but mainly crawling).
