With a distinct lack of enthusiasm pervading the hut and the rain continuing to fall I managed to get Nigel and Gordon to agree to go to Gavel. We figured it would be too wet for the bottom pitches so we only packed ropes for the top two pitches and planned to go look at the pretties before the 3rd pitch.

Fortunately the weather was clearing by the time we hit Leck Fell so getting changed and walking to the cave was a lot nicer than expected. We were surprised to find some NPC ropes in situ but from the white furry stuff on some of the crabs it looks like they have been there for a while. Anyway rigging for ourselves we zipped down to the streamway and through the crawls for a bit of calcite appreciation.

As the beer was catching up with Nigel he headed out while Gordon and I headed down stream to have a quick look around. We then followed Nigel and by using both sets of ropes I was derigging at the same time as Gordon was heading up the pitch - it was a little odd really!

Then it was back to the cars to get changed in some rather nice weather with a beautiful view of the Lancaster and the sea.

Party: Brian Cullen, Nigel Steel, Gordon
Length (guess): About 3 hours?

Good report Brian.

I really enjoyed this ideal Sunday cave. There was a lot more to it than I was expecting.

The pitches were very straightforward and short.

It was quite nice to be walking around the bottom of an open pot looking up at the cliffs, it always gives a good perspective; on what seemed to be a dry day despite the forecast.
Perhaps we could have done something more daring - but hindsight is a wonderful thing and I am very glad that Brian took us down the very pretty Gavel.

I think there were 4 boulders to squeeze under? but literally only a couple of feet long - nothing compared to the memories of Wales anyway. And more to the point well worth doing for the views beyond. Almost wished I had taken a camera. This little cave is a gem, absolutely packed with lots and lots to see and admire.

A special thanks to Brian and Nigel who despite an epic trip on Saturday still managed a good trip on Sunday.

Looking forward to the next one and promises of lands afar next year......

Yes i enjoyed the trip a good Sunday effort, was glad i did not have to repeat my historionics on the last pitch, last time the YSS were there. We should sort a permit and go and clean the mud off some of those beautiful formations in Glasfurd's passage :)

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
