Old good Alum Pot. Place I’ve been surprisingly only once despite the fact that it’s in the YSS garden. The School was filling up on Friday evening when we arrived, a presage of a busy weekend. Three of us fancied an evening trip and seeing the nice weather, Pete J decided to join us which gave us a nice opportunity to do a little exchange trip.

It was pretty chilly at the car and it was clear that the temperature felt below zero as we could feel a crispy grass under our feet while walking to the shaft. Nice evening with million stars above our helmets. Stuart and Pete rigged the split pitch and me and Shezi went for the direct drop. As Paul G and Chris with his dog went for a walk, Chris kindly showed us the tree where we were supposed to start. Shezi did a good job and soon I could hear a remote voice shouting something about a rope. Alum pot is much less scary in the darkness. Just a long abseil into nowhere. It was nice to hear voices and flickering light on the other side of the shaft. Perfect timing, we all arrived to the bottom at the same time.

Pete and Shez started their way up and me and Stu, instead of freezing on the bottom, decided to go for the sump. I took a wrong cascade on the way down which turned to be a bit dodgy, my body was nearly split into to halves...still being a meter above the ground. I see a hectic gesticulation from Stuart pointing to the other side. Oopy Daisy, I’m going a wrong way! I climbed back and soon met Stuart on the bottom: ‘’Wow, I nearly suicided myself!’’. He didn’t say anything to that...but told this story in the evening in the pub and it quickly became a hit of the weekend. There are still some ‘gaps’ in my English

There was a massive amount of water coming from Diccan, it looked very impressive to me. We turned around and made our way out, a bit of de-rigging racing. I was happy to be on the top since I thought that we won and told Shezi to sacrifice a bit of safety and to hurry up. I shout over the shaft: ‘’Yeah, we won!!!’’...I turned around and saw to lights standing behind the wall ;)

The walk back to the car was floodlit by the moonlight...great trip.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
